It has taken me a little while longer than usual to read this book from Andy. I finished it on my fourth and final flight from home to Germany where I am currently melting in a freaking heat wave.
It is very well written like the previous moto journeys of Andy’s I have read and I did enjoy it overall but the story itself did not always hold my attention.
Hard to put my finger on exactly why but perhaps it was the pacing but more likely the setting of the book, USA, and I don’t say that in a negative way but I am already familiar with the American landscapes, places and culture which Andy wrote about albeit in his ever entertaining way.
I have been to the States a few times (and hope to go again when I won’t be forced to hand over my phone and PC unlocked to immigration as is the currently happening). I find moto touring there to be highly underrated by people who live outside the USA and think it is all straight highways. The scenery is quite amazing too.
Andy shares many funny observations and describes roadside USA very accurately and if you have not done a ride in the USA then you will get lots of laughs and some insights from this book. For myself I was reading what I already had experienced and knew which is probably why I was putting it down and reading something else and ultimately taking a while for me to finish it.
That said I recommend this book, especially if you have not been to the USA and do put the country on your ride list, especially the west which I think has such amazing landscapes and super friendly people.
p.s. I edited my previous book review of Free Ride after people told me it sounded negative which was not my intention. I am not a wordsmith like the people who’s books I read and review here thus sometimes my posts can be interpreted differently.
