The road from Bombala to Orbost is one of the best rides in the country in my opinion.
Sweeping grand high plains road, a little bit of gravel then 105km of non stop corners down to Orbost. Bombala is a destination in itself, great history and affordable pubs and of course the major bike show of the country held there every year.

To the ride itself, the short gravel section is very easy and then you have a mixture of road surface. If you have your suspension set compliant for ‘aussie roads’ not the race track then you should never be bothered. I have read sports bike riders saying it was bumpy but frankly that’s nonsense, set you bike suspension for touring.

Australian high country scenery is spectacular. A must ride road.

These ‘good road’ posts were published 2006-2008. At some point the original images and descriptions became out of date and I moved overseas. I archived them here to update when I ride Australia again. This collection is just my own personal riding records, not a definitive list.

  1. Looking forward to hearing about the ride when it happens. Two-wheeled rides rock!

  2. Hey Chef,
You'll love this! (The Bonang Road) Rode it last December, over a 100ks of twisties, just magic! Best road I've ridden so far

    Cheers

  3. I live in the small hamlet of Goongerah, half way thereabouts between Bombala and Orbost, so for us locals, the legendary Bonang is our main road, at the end of each of our driveways! Great news is that sealing of the final 11kms is about to start which will make the Bonang the premier 100km+ of twisty tarmac for motorcycles in the country. There are many blind corners and still the occasional log truck (they should have been banned on the Bonang years ago), so treat this road with respect, folks. Goongerah has a lovely campground on the Brodribb River for those looking to take a break and there will be an AirBnB option in the near future at the old school house next to the Community Hall…
