For the last 15 years I have been doing fly ride tours using the free cloth cover that comes with new helmets but getting a proper helmet bag has made my life easier.
After my first few fly ride tours I changed from carrying a helmet onboard to packing my helmet in my checked luggage. The reason was two fold. Firstly I was stopped by airport security in Nagoya Japan and told I cannot take it onboard. The airline I was using did not have any rules stopping helmets on board but airport security staff can and do make up their own rules which is why security checks vary so much from airport to airport.
The other reason I switched to packing it in my checked luggage is I didn’t want to lug a helmet around various airports (and Tokyo trains) along with my carry on bag which was already heavy enough. (oh and finding space in the storage bins on LCC flights for a helmet was always a challenge).
Before placing inside my checked luggage I fill the helmet inside with many things to save space (being careful to pad the inside of the visor). I always pack things around the helmet to pad it and have never had any damage.
Recently it occurred to me I should get a proper case given how much I travel.

I now have this fine case with sturdy nylon outer and a thick fleece lining. I’m still going to pack things around my helmet to pad it but this case really ups the protection level when it’s in transit.
Also it is now very easy to carry my helmet. Let me elaborate. I have this system, on the morning when I collect a rental bike I put my riding pants and boots on at the hotel, leave my jacket in my main bag but remove my helmet and transfer the things I had packed inside it to my main bag so the helmet is ready for use upon arrival at the rental shop. So from hotel to shop I carry it and this case makes that easier.
I have ordered a new helmet after my accident in New Zealand and that is the Nolan N-70 2X which has a peak (review after my next ride). I find the peak needs to be removed before placing into this carry case however that is quick on the N-70 2X and needs no tools.
Originally I wasn’t going to post about this case but occasionally little things make a difference and that has been my experience with this. One of those items I could do without but now I have it I wish I had got one years ago.
