I have another pair of gloves to talk about. The ‘Boxer’ motorcycle gloves from Five.

These are a short summer style glove but with a difference. They have a waterproof lining.

I did not buy them to use in rain, they are not long enough for a jacket to be able to seal around the cuffs so would not make good rain gloves. Rather I just wanted a lined summer glove which is something difficult to find.

I need a lined glove because I suffer from dermatitis and am also allergic to the tannins used in making leather. Lined summer gloves are fairly uncommon here, I had two pairs in Japan where local brands do limited production runs of Coolmax lined summer gloves which sell out fairly quick as well RS Taichi produce some summer gloves with polyester liners but I’d need to check the gloves in person to confirm.

I was wearing the Five Boxer gloves on my recent ride in New Zealand from lunch time most days when the days warmed up. They worked quite well. I could still feel an air flow through the fingers. Of course nothing like a mesh summer glove but these gloves were never hot and stuffy. The liner does not act strongly to stop circulation of air or restrict breathability.

Comfort is good, actually I am very pleased with the way these gloves feel. The cut of the materials and the stitching of the fingers is good. Overall these are a well made glove as far as hand comfort goes which is not common these days. I tried on many gloves at my local motorcycle accessory shop and all felt coarse inside with poorly applied internal stitching.

Protection wise they could be better. They are CE1 rated and have knuckle armor but it is not D30 and a small palm slider and a little super fabric. I would like more protection but most gloves are only CE1 rated and there are very few summer gloves that are CE2 and none are lined that I know of.

I have used separate glove liners previously. It was a hassle and never really worked well, the liner needs to be stitched in the glove and held in place.

I bought these gloves before my accident in New Zealand and now post that I am examining all my gear and looking at what I can upgrade. The back of my hands were bruised but otherwise not injured wearing my CE1 rated Rough and Road Gore-tex gloves so I guess they did their job reasonably well.

A CE2 glove might have done better. Hard to say for sure. The Rev’it Sand gloves I bought but have not yet used have a much larger rear of hand armor which I found slightly inflexible but might have reduced the impact in that accident. I am waiting for a summer hot weather ride to break in those Rev’it gloves but since my G310GS was stolen that might not happen for a long time.

Hands and feet are listed as the where many injuries occur with motorcycle accidents. I am going to look for higher protection boots and gloves going forward.

But as far as things go with these Five gloves I am going to give them the thumbs up. They do the job I was after of being a summer short glove that breathes well but also has a liner to insulate my skin from the leather and offers CE1 certified protection.

I got these gloves from EasyR who I find are very prompt to ship with good communication.
