Vista Cruise Control

I find my throttle hand gets sore at the end of the day when touring and thought I would give one of these a try.

I previously tried the Throttle Rocker type devices and they didn’t really work for me. You need to have them angled up 60 degrees at stop to be in right position on the highway and then off throttle it is easy for them to interfere with throttle.

Installation was very easy, about 10 minutes including reading the instructions. Just move mirror/brake clamp to left to make room for Vista clamp. Slide rubber ring and lock section over grip, attack to arm and thumb lever and done. I then needed to tighten it up the adjuster nut a few turns so it grabs the throttle grip enough to hold it in place when applied.

On the Buell with its V-Twin the Vista worked somewhat ok ….I could engage it and the road speed would slowly increase or decrease and sometimes even stay the same for a small period. This then allowed me to rest my hand for few moments but I found that I would end up slowly building speed or slowly reducing speed no matter how many adjustments I made so its not something that can be used very effectively.

Now I have it on the MV Agusta it works even less effectively. Being an inline four and having a more sensitive throttle and lighter flywheel it is impossible to get the Vista engaged and not be slowing or accelerating at a rate too great to leave engaged for more than 10 seconds. It is surprising how many minute constant throttle adjustments we make riding.

I can’t recommend, perhaps if riding remote roads where it doesn’t matter what the speed but for me this isn’t the solution I thought it would be.

  1. Did you have any issues getting the rubber ring over your throttle grip? I had a devil of a time with my Sabre. Love it though. Cheap way to keep your from getting numb on long rides.

  2. There were two rubber rings in the pack and the standard size one was right for my type of grip un altered – so I was lucky. I have read of some people needing to trim the rubber ring slightly and was expecting the same but was perfect straight out of the pack.

  3. To resurrect an old entry, have you tried the Vista on your new bike? What about a Cramp Buster for small periods of relief? And the old Cat O-Ring to jam between the left side of the grip and your starter box?

  4. I have it installed on the new(ish) Buell and it works for short time relief. With the torque from the Vtwin it doesn't creep up or drop off in speed as much as the inline four MV did but it still does to a lesser degree and no way it will sit on one speed for long. But you know do that occasionally and it makes a difference on a long haul.

The Cramp buster I previously tried and found to be useless. Maybe works for some but not me.

Any thing that jams the throttle will give same result as the Vista. Too bad there isnt more cruise control options as I could really would enjoy a tour more if I had that on the open highway but I don't otherwise need a bike the size of the full BMW or Harley tourers that offer cruise.

I wish they would spend less money on making more horsepower that most people have no desire for and offer more bells and whistles.

  5. I now have a new motorcycle, the 2010 Honda CB1100 which will be a great bike to tour on so I want a cruise control but am not going to bother fitting the Vista as it really is of limited assistance.
I have ordered a car electronic cruise control and will be fitting that in the early part of 2011. Look out for that post and follow up then.

  6. Hey mate,

All booked in at PipeMasters. Hope to ride up the weekend of 12~14 of August and ride back the weekend of 19~21

    Cheers,

  7. Cool. My CB runs fine with their system and the balance seems ok with some loss of torque at lower revs and some gain in hp higher in the rpm range which is the norm. Of course the sound is pure old school and I like that a lot.
